Medical Student Oath

“Health entrusted, lives at stake… I am determined to strive to relieve human suffering, promote the perfection of health, and safeguard the sanctity and honor of the medical profession…” Led by Zhou Yian, a student from the School of Basic Medical Sciences, all new students solemnly recited the medical student oath. With each spoken vow, youth and the healer’s conscience converged—a sacred covenant sworn in the name of life.

Address by Undergraduate Freshman Representative Chen Yiyan

She called on her fellow students to: first, study diligently and think critically, honing their abilities through constant practice to achieve clinical mastery without the slightest complacency; second, uphold professional integrity, let virtue purify their original aspirations, and live by the university’s motto “Health, Society, Virtue, Ability” and steadfastly fulfill the duty of healing and serving humanity; and third, remain reverent and courageous in embracing the contemporary mission, always holding life in awe and keeping their passion for medicine alive, striving to grow into skilled, compassionate, and courageously mission-driven healers of the new era.

Address by Graduate Freshman Representative Yang Haorui

“Knowing the difficulties, yet still giving our all.” Yang Haorui, a master’s student in surgery from the affiliated Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital and graduate freshman representative, put forward calls to action: first, to refine medical skills—while undergraduates focus on “what to do,” graduate students must further ask “why” and “how”; second, to commit to research that answers clinical questions—probing the rationale behind every diagnostic and therapeutic decision while mining clues from seemingly “useless” data; and third, to serve the Healthy China initiative and engage in the nation’s rejuvenation—whether in implementing national strategies, advancing medical frontiers, or responding to patients’ expectations for quality of life, the new generation of medical youth must respond actively and shoulder responsibilities with courage.

Address by Faculty Representative Professor Wang Wei

“Choosing CMU means choosing to walk with life, to safeguard health, and to be closely tied to the well-being of the people and the nation,” said Professor Wang Wei, a doctoral supervisor from the School of Basic Medical Sciences. “Medicine has no shortcuts, and growth is never instantaneous.” She offered three pieces of advice: embrace the wave of AI while remaining a warm and empathetic healer; find your own pace of growth to become a better version of yourself; and broaden your vision so that youth and the times meet in mutual pursuit. She encouraged students to look beyond personal gains, reject utilitarian and short-sighted thinking, and integrate their professional ideals and life goals into the broader cause of national health development. The true value of medicine, she noted, lies in wholehearted treatment, silent dedication, and service to the country and its people. On behalf of all faculty, she pledged to guide and accompany students along their academic journey, to embrace every trial and misstep, and to help them mature into capable and accomplished professionals.

Address by President Zhang Luo

“Among countless possibilities, you have chosen the medical profession and Capital Medical University. This choice is not merely the establishment of your personal aspirations, but also a solemn affirmation of the supreme value of life.” On behalf of the university, Zhang Luo warmly welcomed the incoming students and sincerely thanked all parents and educators for their support in cultivating these young talents. He remarked that the quality of this year's incoming class has continued to improve, with admission scores rising steadily. This recognition from society at large of Capital Medical University's rich heritage over the decades is matched by the collective surge of the youth—including the students present—toward the cause of "Healthy China."

President Zhang Luo put forward three earnest expectations. First, stay curious—treat every day as a “journey of discovery.” In anatomy classes, under the microscope, and during clinical rounds, experience the fascination of medicine. The most captivating aspect of medicine is that the unknown always awaits. He hopes that what students gain at CMU is not only skills but also a heart that remains curious and exploratory. Second, dare to break new ground—let every cross-disciplinary endeavour become a “stepping stone for growth.” Actively embrace the transformations brought by AI and big data, transcend the boundaries of single disciplines, broaden horizons, and venture boldly to expand the frontiers of human medicine. Third, keep warmth in your hearts—let every handshake become a “healing remedy.” He reminded everyone that the “healing remedy” is not only written on prescriptions but also found in the smile that greets patients and the gaze that listens to their concerns. He urged students to master solid clinical competence while safeguarding the healer’s compassion. The university and all its faculty will always stand behind them, protecting and supporting them. He expressed the hope that students would embark on their journey from Capital Medical University, achieve academic success, and let their youth blossom.
